University of Dundee
Three University of Dundee Town and Regional Planning students will make their final presentations to
officials from Dundee Council's Planning and Transportation Department in the hope of winning the Dundee
Civic Prize. The Council’s Director of Planning and Transportation, Mike Galloway, along with other
Council officials will make their decision on the winner at the University on Friday June 11.
The prize is awarded for a piece of course work in which the students directly address a 3-dimensional
urban design problem within the city. The three short listed candidates, David Doogan, Neil Williamson
and Beverley Webb who all graduate this summer have investigated Dundee’s Blackness area.
The students undertake an exhaustive analysis of the historical development, townscape quality and
potential of a specified area, identifying development opportunities. They then formulate proposals for
urban restructuring, circulation and integration of land uses within the surrounding area, both
identifying general design principles and development strategies for the area as a whole and
demonstrating how those general principles would apply to key development sites.
Anne Thomas Cumming of the School of Town and Regional Planning said, "The Civic Prize demonstrates the
excellent relationship between the School of Town and Regional Planning and the Dundee Transport and
Planning Department. Awarding the prize on the basis of the verbal presentation also gives students
valuable experience in communicating their ideas in a public forum, which is a necessary skill for their
working lives."
Presentations will begin at 9.00 am on Friday June 11 with the prizewinner announced at 11.00am.
