The University of Dundee's School of Nursing and Midwifery will hold its first ever postgraduate student conference on Tuesday, June 17.
The event, at which 16 postgraduates will present their research papers, symbolises the continued growth of the School's research activity since it joined the University in 1996. Previously, only members of staff from the School have completed postgraduate degrees there - this is the first year that a significant number of other students have undertaken postgraduate qualifications.
Papers to be presented by students on Tuesday cover topics including domestic violence as a gendered public health concern and theneeds of partners of heart failure patients . There will also be two plenary speakers. Professor Sheila Hunt, Dean of the School will give a presentation entitled 'Researching in the real world - the things I wish I had known before I started', while Mrs Theresa Fyffe, Nursing Officer with the Scottish Executive Health Department will speak about 'Maximising the opportunities for nurses and midwives to develop and evidence base to underpin their practice'.
Dr Charles Hendry, lecturer at the School and Chair of the event, said, "Expanding the School's research capacity is a major goal, since research ultimately improves patient care and patient outcomes.
"This conference represents another significant step in the School's research activity as it demonstrates the impressive growth in the School's ability to support and supervise research activity in the short time since our integration into higher education."
