5 June 2003
The emerald glow of a laser light pentagram, one hundred colourful cakes and 15kg of dental floss are just a few of the unexpected ingredients which promise to make the 2003 Dundee Degree Show yet another exciting and inspiring offering from final year students of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD).
The diversity of work on show originating from the Schools of Fine Art, Design, Television and Imaging (TVi) and Architecture is the culmination of more than 200 students’ personal and creative development during several years of study. Visitors will be inspired and delighted by the creativity and flair of the latest batch of students to emerge from of one of the UK’s leading art colleges.
This is a brilliant year for soon-to-be graduates of DJCAD. Professor Georgina Follett, Dean, said, "The level of quality on display at every annual degree show never fails to impress us and things are no different this year. We are proud to open our doors to the public so they can see for themselves just how much the combination of fine teaching and natural talent, which works so well at DJCAD can achieve".
"Of particular note, there has been a continuing standard of excellence achieved in the digital arena, with outstanding dexterity being demonstrated in time-based and animation disciplines."
Amongst the digital-based work on display this year is that of Douglas Simpson, Animation and Electronic Media, TVi, whose cinema trailer for Hannaywood Films was recently screened before nine films at the Cannes film festival.
There have also been successes in the Graphics field with students Andrew Gillon and Lisa Wilson winning categories in RSA Student Design Awards. A further three students, Debbie McKay, Stephen Flynn and Simon Ramsay, have been nominated in the Information Design and TV Graphics sections of the 2003 British Design and Art Direction Student Awards to be announced on July 8.
Meanwhile, Head of Fine Art Euan MacArthur has spoken of, "another excellent and diverse year demonstrating the talents of the students who pass through the Fine Art course". Sarah Forrest, who picked up a prestigious award in this year’s RSA Exhibition in Edinburgh is just one example of this years Fine Art talent.
School of Architecture students will be displaying the results of five years of study. Working with local industries, communities and Dundee City Council, the students have createded a vision for the city worthy of its unique setting and well-founded optimism for the future.
