Ruby Walker, a domestic assistant at the University of Dundee retires today after nearly four decades at Belmont Hall student residence.
Ruby, of Coldside, Dundee, has seen considerable changes in Belmont over the years. When she started there in 1964, the residences housed 150 male students who sat down to dinner each evening in collar and tie. Now Belmont is a mixed residence where ties tend to come out only on graduation day.
Belmont manager Pat Carnegie organised a send off for Ruby at Belmont today. She said, "We didn't want her to retire without recognition for all the hard work she's put in and all the smiles she's brought to so many faces. Ruby's a real gem - her chatty personality has made her popular with staff and students alike and we've often had new students asking to be placed in 'Ruby's hall' after hearing about her from previous residents."
Ruby's husband Bill still works at Scott Brothers butchers but Ruby won't be lonely since she has two retired sisters to keep her company.
Ruby said, "I have loved my job and always enjoyed seeing new faces come into Belmont every year. I'll be sad to go but I'm looking forward to putting my feet up and taking it easy."
