An advert for a magical freckle-removing lotion, a hi-tech virtual music club and a plan to make lawn bowls trendy have scooped three imaginative Graphic Design students at the University of Dundee prestigious national recognition.
Karen Borring, from Denmark, is celebrating her decision to study in Dundee, after her punchy advertisement for an imaginary freckle-removing lotion won her the HAAG Best of Health Students Awards.
Karen, in third year, originally intended to spend six months away from her native country on a placement at the University but enjoys her course so much she decided to complete it in Dundee. Karen took first place amongst hundreds of entries, earning £250.
Also celebrating is Simon Ramsay, third year, who won the Scottish Design Award student category with his plan to liven up lawn bowls for the younger generation. In addition to a cash award from marketing magazine The Drum, Simon's work will be displayed at the famous Lighthouse, a centre for architecture and design in Glasgow, and he has already been offered a work placement with a major design company.
Fourth year Edward Walker has received a £5000 bursary and a three month work placement with a leading New York design company for his cutting edge design for a "virtual" music club.
Edward, whose work will be on display next week ( from June 14) at the final year Degree Show, was selected from amongst more than 2200 entries for the British Design & Art Direction bursary.
Course Director David Herbert said: "These are high profile awards within the design world and for Duncan of Jordanstone to have three winners is a great achievement - not only for the students themselves but also for the University as a whole. All three students demonstrated a creative flair in their respective entries and success at this level will benefit them greatly for the future.
