Students from the University of Dundee who have been helping out in Fife schools will be presented with certificates this evening (Wednesday 5 June) at a presentation ceremony at the University of Dundee.

Twenty one students from the University have been working in schools in Fife for 10 weeks helping out class teachers in their own subject areas. As well as providing an extra pair of hands to help the class teacher, the students act as ambassadors for higher education, telling the pupils and teachers about University and the courses that are available. Students can answer any questions pupils may have about life at University, and the opportunities that higher education offers.

A number of student tutors are also thinking about becoming teachers after they graduate and are using the tutoring scheme as practical experience in the classroom to help them decide if they are suited to teaching.

Kirsty McGregor is a history student who was a student tutor at Pitteuthar primary school in Glenrothes. Kirsty said: " I really enjoyed working with the children on their environmental studies projects. The experience made me decide on primary teaching as a career. I am planning on applying to do a postgraduate qualification to teach after I graduate next year."

The Wider Access Study Centre at the University of Dundee organises for students to visit schools for one morning each week for a period of ten weeks. The scheme also operates in Dundee and Angus.
