The annual University of Dundee DUTECH challenge takes place tomorrow inviting school teams from all over Tayside, Fife and Central regions to invent and engineer a novel piece of kitchen equipment from a set of basic materials in just five hours.
All the teams will be given the same set of basic materials: balsa wood, axels, gears, batteries, drawing pins, glue, rubber bands, motor holder set, cooking foil and ball bearings among other things.
Teams of five aspiring designers and manufacturers will race against the clock to produce their kitchen equipment and also consider the marketing potential of their product. All teams will be required to design a poster and prepare a press release which will be judged along with their design.
Alan Slade, Dundee University technology and engineering challenge day (DUTECH) organiser said: "This one day event is all about introducing potential undergraduates to life at the University and more specifically to life as an engineering student. They will discover that engineering is fun - it's not all about getting your hands dirty and dull lectures. The pupils will really enjoy themselves and get stuck into the spirit of the challenge."
