Photo opportunity, 11.30am, Thursday June 13, School of Design, Level 4, Crawford Building, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee.
A prize giving on Thursday will provide the chance for a lucky few business owners to have a sneak preview of some of the most innovative work this year's Dundee Degree Show has to offer.
The latest creations of final year School of Design students - set up for assessment and the opening of the show on Friday - will be under scrutiny from the owner of Crieff's Strathearn Gallery and the director of Rattray's Jewellers in Dundee, both of whom will award cash prizes for cutting edge design.
Strathearn Gallery owner Edith MacGuire and her daughter Fiona will select the most promising students from both the Ceramics and Jewellery & Metalwork departments within the School. Fiona graduated in Jewellery and Metalwork from Duncan of Jordanstone in 1988, while her brother John graduated in Ceramics in 1985.
Edith McGuire said, "I know from Fiona's and John's experiences as young graduates, and from running a gallery with my husband, that it can be tough for young artists starting out. That is why we decided several years ago to begin awarding this annual prize, both to help the students and to give something back to Duncan of Jordanstone."
Also faced with the difficult task of selecting a winner from Jewellery & Metalwork is Andrew Kay, Rattray's director. He said, " Rattray's is one of the oldest jewellers in Dundee and as such, we feel we want to show our support to up-and-coming jewellery makers who may ultimately contribute to future styles and designs. It is always a difficult task though, because while all the work is extremely high quality it is also very diverse."
Roger Morris, course director of Jewellery and Metalwork said, "We are delighted that two local businesses have chosen to support the students as they are about to embark on their careers and, in the case of the Maguires, it is also gratifying to know that former students still feel an attachment to Duncan of Jordanstone."
Members of the public must wait until Saturday to feast their eyes on
the work of more than 200 students from every DoJ department. Opening times
