New look for drugs suite

Photo opportunity 3pm, Wednesday 12 June, L5 Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone, Perth Road, Dundee.

An interior design student at the University of Dundee will be presented with an award today for designing the interior of one of the University's first spin out companies - DDS Medicines, based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

Five students completed a project to re-design the entrance and office areas of DDS Medicines to celebrate its twentieth year. Erica Thomson, a final year interior design student has been chosen as the winner and her interior will be installed later this year.

David Sommerville, medical director of DDS Medicines will present all five students with a prize. Erica's winning design created a sophisticated design scheme with a covered walkway entrance featuring display panels for information about the company.

Roland Ashcroft, interior design course director at Duncan of Jordanstone faculty of art and design explained: "DDS Medicines is a company with an international reputation but in its current location it is quite anonymous. The students were challenged with giving the company a presence. Erica's stylish design effectively achieves this."

As well as the new walkway, Erica's plans include reversing the layout of the offices with a new glass covered corridor.

DDS medicines spun out from the University's department of pharmacology and therapeutics in 1982. The company has gone from strength to strength providing a drug testing service for the pharmaceutical industry to establish the general health effects of drugs on humans after they have been deemed safe for testing. The data from the trials is then reported to the pharmaceutical companies so they can decide if the general health benefits of the drugs allow them to pursue its manufacture developing its therapeutic aims.
