Major financial donation for Cancer Research UK

Just over two months ago the first major fundraising event held in Scotland by the newly formed charity Cancer Research UK took place at the Gleneagles Hotel.

Now, the work done by the charity's Perth and District Committee to organise two spectacular fashion shows, a ladies luncheon, and a black tie dinner, has produced an equally impressive result.

It has just been revealed that the initiative, spearheaded by Ken and Kirsty McKenzie, of Horsemill House, near Bridge of Earn, has exceeded its target and has raised the stunning sum of just over £53,000 from the single day of activity.

The money raised by the Committee will help ensure that Cancer Research UK will continue to fund pioneering, world-class scientists in Scotland.

There could be no more appropriate location for the handover of the cheque than Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, which has become a centre of excellence and a world leader in the fight against cancer.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the charity will be Ninewells-based Professor Sir David Lane of the University of Dundee, who is a world renowned pioneering research scientist.

Today Professor Lane said that he was delighted to receive the cheque on behalf of Cancer Research UK.

"Teams across the country are working every day to find a cure for cancer and donations to this tune are vital to that work." he said.

Also attending the event will be Ken and Kirsty McKenzie, the Perth and District Committee Chair Mina Johnson, and Bill Chalmers, the Committee Secretary.
