Medical students scoop prizes

Two medical students who have been awarded a clutch of nine prizes in total will graduate tomorrow
(12 July) from the University of Dundee.
24-year-old Emma Hughes from Greenock has been awarded five prizes including the Captain W A Low
Memorial Prize and Medal for the most distinguished student in the graduating class and the
American Medical Graduates' Prize in Memory of Sir James Irvine for Psychiatry. Emma has also won
the Jean Herring Prize for the most distinguished female in the graduating class as well as the
Lloyd Turton prize in Surgery and the Sir James Mackenzie prize for Epidemiology & Public Health.
After graduating Emma will carry out her two year foundation programme for the Argyle and Clyde
health board trust and is considering specialising in hospital medicine.
Emma said, "It is a real bonus to have received these prizes as graduating from medicine has been
my main achievement."
Kate Haslett (22) from Edinburgh will graduate on Tuesday afternoon having been awarded the R C
Alexander Memorial Prize in Surgery, the Bonnetmaker Prize for understanding of medical sociology
and psychology in project work, the American Medical Graduates' Prize in Memory of Sir James Irvine
for Pathology and also the Dean's Prize.
Kate will undertake her two year foundation post in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and is
particularly interested in hospital medicine.
Kate said "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Dundee. I am delighted to be graduating from the
University with all the support from my friends and family."
Kate, Emma and other prize winning students will graduate on the afternoon of Tuesday 12 July in
the Caird Hall in the ceremony for the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning students at a presentation ceremony in the Air Bar, Dundee
University Student Association at 4.00pm, following the graduation ceremony.
