COUNTER - PHOTOGRAPHY: Japan's Artists Today
Lamb Gallery
Until 17 August 2004
The University of Dundee Exhibitions Department is proud to host the touring exhibition 'Counter -
Photography: Japan's Artists Today'.
On loan from The Japan Foundation this exhibition introduces photographic works by 11 Japanese
Artists, the common theme being the photographer's desire to capture a world invisible to the human eye -
the world of 'the spirit'. Such an attitude reflects the propensity of the Japanese to perceive the
spiritual aspect of life.

Halle (Germany) and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee. The exhibition
has been shown in Warsaw, Poland and Potsdam, Germany before coming to Dundee.
Our perceptions and reactions to the body are affected by time, memories and events, as well as
social, medical and historical knowledge and conventions. The artists in Body Memory explore the complex

Nathan Coley
JERUSALEM SYNDROME
30 October - 27 November 2004
Cooper Gallery
For this exhibition, commissioned by University of Dundee Exhibitions Department, internationally
acclaimed Dundee-based artist Nathan Coley travelled to Israel to explore the bizarre phenomenon of
'Jerusalem Syndrome'.
'Jerusalem Syndrome' is a rare travel psychosis, afflicting people who find themselves intoxicated by
the Holy City. Those affected can be found at holy sites, chanting, singing, and delivering sermons as if
living in the time of Christ.
Coley's work is an ongoing enquiry into place, identity and belief. He is interested in documenting
and reacting to a specific place or event, and attempting to make sense of it in the wider world.
