A Perth mother who had missed her original graduation ceremony joined her graduating son on the platform in a surprise move by the University of Dundee this week.
Daniel Woodford is one of 34 design students exhibiting at the New Designers show in London during graduation week, for whom the university staged a special graduation ceremony in a London art gallery on Tuesday. Three years ago, before the university initiated the London ceremonies, his mother Jane graduated in absentia when she missed the Caird Hall event in order to exhibit her ceramics at the New Designers show - an important event for designers seeking to build their careers.
When Dean of the Faculty Georgina Follett found Jane was in London to see Daniel graduate, a gown was swiftly commandeered and she invited Jane forward to be formally dubbed by the Chancellor Sir James Black with the traditional Dundee bonnet.
Jane said: "I never expected this at all when I came to London. It was a very special moment and really lovely to be part of Daniel's occasion. Like others I was disappointed first time around to miss graduation due to the clash with the New Designers Show. We wrote to the University Principal and it's wonderful to see this has been the result."
