Footballers put hearts into TICR campaign

Putting their hearts into it - Dundee United players are lending their backing to the campaign to develop a centre dedicated to tackling one of Scotland's biggest health problems - heart disease. The Institute for Cardiovascular Research established by the University of Dundee at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School pools the strengths of five leading specialist teams to take a multi-pronged approach to the problems of heart disease from food and fitness to vascular medicine and epidemiology or population studies.

Professor Allan Struthers of the University's department of clinical pharmacology (pictured) welcomed the support of Dundee United players. "Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death and ill health in Scotland which has some of the worst statistics in the Western world. Regular exercise is one of the ways in which we can all - young and not so young - help combat this so it's particularly helpful to have the support of Dundee United players in getting the TICR message across. Don't score an 'own goal' exercise your ticker!"

Also pictured is chairman of the fund raising campaign Robert McLaren who is looking for popular support to reach a target of £3.5 million. If you have a fundraising idea contact the TICR appeals office on 01382 344821.
