A student who has just returned from a 10-day voyage on the Prince William training ship for community and team work will graduate from the University of Dundee this week with a special prize.
Joanna Sutherland (22), a nursing student from Newport, will be awarded the Ede & Ravenscroft award for superior academic performance. Joanna said: "I'm thrilled and very surprised. I've not yet decided what to spend the £250 prize money on but I'll definitely put it to good use."
Joanna's trip on the Prince William was part of her programme for the Duke of Edinburgh gold award. She spent ten days with a group of people from all over the country experiencing the team work involved in running a ship. The Prince William is one of two brigs from the Sail Training Association that serve community projects. As another venture in her Duke of Edinburgh programme, Joanna served as a volunteer first aider at T in the Park last weekend for St Andrews ambulance service.
Joanna hopes to secure a job in the next few weeks nursing in Tayside. She will graduate on Thursday 12 July at 10.30am - the first time the School of Nursing and Midwifery has had a summer ceremony of its own. Joanna's parents Bruce and Marion who own and run Sutherland's hairdressers in Newport will be at the ceremony with her sister Laura (24) to see her graduate.ENDS
