The only first class honours in botany at the University of Dundee this year has been scooped by mature student and mum of three Joyce McCluskey (49) from Kirriemuir.
Joyce enrolled for her degree in botany after her interest was sparked by a six month course with the Scottish wildlife trust and two years of entry qualifications with the Open University while she was unemployed. She was enthralled by plant identification and, already a keen gardener, decided to pursue her interest full time at University. Joyce previously worked as a draftswoman and brought up her three sons on her own. She is now looking for a job in research based around Dundee.
Joyce said: "I've really loved studying for my degree. It has been a big personal challenge as I never thought I'd go to University. The staff were very supportive and I'm delighted that I've achieved a first class honours.
Joyce will graduate on Thursday 12 July at 2.15pm in the Caird Hall watched by her three sons Colin (20), Alan (19) and Ben (16).ENDS
