12 July 2001
Two mature students who fell in love on campus at the University of Dundee will graduate in the same ceremony on Friday 13 July. Peter Moug (36) is taking a first class degree in politics while Libby Mackay (40) - the first of a family of ten to study at University - will graduate with a 2:1 in psychology.
Peter and Libby started dating after meeting in their second year at the University of Dundee. Peter left his previous job as a quarry technician because he felt he needed a new challenge. He will be picking up the only first class degree in politics this year and the Alex Reid prize for the best dissertation - on the compatibility of environmental issues with democratic structures.
Dr Norrie Macqueen, head of the politics department said: "We are always delighted to be able to award a first class degree, but particularly so in the case of Peter who joined us by a less than easy route and who had to meet real challenges to pursue his studies to such a terrific conclusion. We are also very pleased that Peter has won our Alex Reid prize for his excellent final year dissertation."
Libby was allowed leave from her job at Dundee College as a beauty therapy lecturer to take her degree in psychology and has since returned to post. She has two children Katy (11) and Victor (9) and balanced family responsibilities with academic pressures for four years. Libby said: "It was often difficult trying to juggle my family and my degree but I feel a tremendous sense of achievement."
Peter and Libby will graduate in the same ceremony on Friday at 2.15pm in the Caird Hall. They will be celebrating afterwards with their own garden party at home for both families. All of Libby's nine brothers and sisters are travelling from Clydebank to see their sister graduate.ENDS
