Bursaries for students of new course
A new course at the University of Dundee aimed at bringing management skills and life sciences together has awarded bursaries totalling £6,000 to two outstanding students - money donated by the School of Life Sciences.
The students on the MBA Life Science Industries developed potential projects bridging the gap between science and business management.
Receiving the awards are Dr April Kelly and Dr Mark Peggie. Dr Kelly, from Cell Biology and Immunology, won the bursary for her presentation outlining a project which will develop a service related to cell sorting and analysis.
Dr Mark Peggie from the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit will be looking at income generation for the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy within the School of Life Sciences.
Subjects covered on the MBA course include managing growth in the life science industries, industrial innovation in the sector and strategic management. Modules are completed at the students’ own pace and the entire course only requires nine days out of the office.
Course Director, Dr Julian Sulej says, "This exciting new MBA programme aims to help turn scientists and others into millionaires and builds on and adds to the expertise in areas of life science industries present at the University of Dundee as well as in the surrounding business community - these bursaries are a vital step in enabling high calibre academic scientists to achieve their personal and business ambitions in the dynamic world of life sciences".
The University is a centre of excellence for the life science industry, with the benefits spreading across the city. This new course, the first of its kind in the world, is aimed at bringing management skills to the world of life sciences.
The awards will be made on Friday, 20th January at a MasterClass discussing "Managing Growth Issues in the Life Science Industry" - Speakers are John Brown from Scottish Biomedical and Will Brooks from Quill Investments.
