New postgraduate certificate in Medical Education for General Practice enables distance learning

A new distance learning package which allows GPs and other members of the primary healthcare team to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education in General Practice has been jointly established by the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

The course has been designed specifically for those involved in primary healthcare teaching or training to help them improve their knowledge and skills as teachers and to have a better understanding of education and curriculum development.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education for General Practice can be completed entirely by distance learning and is provided in a number of units which take the form of individual distance learning packs. The course units are grouped into six themes covering: curriculum development; assessment; teaching and learning; research; special options; and general practice issues.

There are several units within each theme and units can be selected to suit individual interests or personal targets. The general practice units for the course have been developed on behalf of the Centre for Medical Education by Dr David Wall and colleagues of the Midland Faculty of the RCGP.

Professor Steve Field, Chair of the RCGP’s Education Network and lead for the project said: "The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education for General Practice is a tremendous opportunity for GPs to develop their skills as educationalists. The course is relevant for trainers, course organisers, assistant advisors and others working in GP education, to enable them to increase their skills in this area. It has been a real privilege for the RCGP to link with The University of Dundee to take forward education in general practice."

Dr Margery Davis, Head of the Centre for Medical Education at the University of Dundee said: "This is an exciting opportunity for GPs and other members of the primary healthcare team to obtain a university qualification in teaching that will enhance their credibility as a teacher."

Access to the main University of Dundee library facilities, including downloadable journals and catalogues, is provided on registering for the course.
