Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) will become the focus of national interest when Baroness Strange raises the issue in the House of Lords next week (Monday 4 February). Following discussions with DUSA, she will ask whether the government will consider limiting the form and content of alcohol advertising.
The Information and Support Service Office (ISS Office) of the Students' Association is being recognised for its work on sensible drinking. This acknowledgement follows a busy round of lobbying with Members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, asking them to make the issue of young people and 'binge drinking' a priority in Parliament.
Chris Bustin, Deputy President and Kathy McGillivray, Manager of the ISS, have also been invited to share their work on this area at the 2002 Club Health Conference to be held in Rimini, Italy, from 24th - 27th March.
DUSA has always implemented a sensible drinking policy, urging students to balance their health and studies with having a good time at university. Recently, the Association passed a Code of conduct on the abuse of alcohol by students and this forms part of growing recognition by DUSA of the problems associated with "binge drinking" in today's society.
Chris Bustin, Deputy President of DUSA said:
"Due to the recent press coverage of this issue, we are delighted that the organisers of this conference, as well as many MPs and Lords, have recognised our expertise in this area. We are looking forward to sharing our working practices and goals with other organisations from all over the globe.
"Sensible drinking must be a priority for all those involved with the welfare of young people."
