University restructuring approved

Proposals to change the academic structure of the University of Dundee into four colleges have been approved by the University Court.

The four college structure will replace the seven faculties which currently make up the University. It is intended to implement the new structure by August 1st this year. Vice-Principals will be appointed to head each of the new colleges.

Principal of the University Sir Alan Langlands said, "The new academic management will ensure that Dundee builds on its recent success in a rapidly changing and competitive environment. The schools will give clearer definition and authority to the professional disciplines and enable further progress in the general arts and sciences and visual disciplines."

The four new colleges will be:

The College of Art & Design, Architecture, Engineering & Physical Sciences
The College of Arts and Social Sciences
The College of Life Sciences, and
The College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing

The colleges will be made up of a number of schools, each headed by its own Dean.

A project team led by Sir Alan Langlands, University Principal and Vice-Chancellor, will commence work immediately on implementing the new structure.

The new structure will be implemented without loss of employment and without demotion of grade for those staff whose role or responsibilities will be affected by the changes.
