HMO Awareness Sessions
The Student Advisory Service at the University of Dundee is helping students to prepare for living in the
private sector by organising awareness sessions particularly aimed at the new legislation covering houses of
multiple occupation (HMO). Since October 2003, all premises housing three or more unrelated people need to
be licensed as HMOs. The benefit for tenants is that all licensed properties are inspected and must meet
certain minimum standards regarding facilities, building maintenance, fire safety and security. Students
will be able to obtain professional advice and guidance from representatives from Dundee City Council, the
Fire Brigade and Tayside Police.
The Student Advisory Service has also produced an essential booklet entitled "Living in Private Accommodation"
as well as useful tips for students when they are searching and inspecting, along with advice on the kinds of
questions they should ask potential landlords. The following website provides further
information: www.dundee.ac.uk/adviceguidance/
Irene Donaldson, Head of the SAS, and Equal Opportunities Officer for Students, said that her department has
been working closely with Dundee City Council in publicising the new rules and to make new and current
students aware that the legislation exists. The benefits for students is that the majority of landlords
are co-operating with the scheme and the standard of accommodation in Dundee is now higher than ever before.
The Awareness Sessions will be held on Wednesday 25th February 2004 in the Tower Extension Lecture Theatre at
1pm and 2.30pm.
