An exhibition of striking head wear created by first year art students is currently on show at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), University of Dundee.
An annual exhibition of work by first year General course students has become a popular annual event at the college. This year's "Urban Heads" is a celebration of creativity and diversity with evocative work that challenges both the artist and the audience.
Students were asked to design functional, experimental and imaginative head gear which explored methods of construction and the inherent qualities of the material used. The result has been diverse, taking influence from topics including the animal world, Japanese Manga cartoons and Native American culture.
Other students exhibiting in the show have explored urban environments, making a personal statement about the relationship between the person and the place. Through a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and film, the work illuminates unique personal thoughts and feelings, highlighting atmosphere, a sense of place, and character.
Jenny Brownrigg, curator of Exhibitions at the University, said, "Urban heads offers an opportunity to see young artists embarking on their chosen vocation. Fresh ideas and unique approaches illustrate how young artistic talent continues to be successfully developed through the General course."
The show runs until February 22 in the Matthew Gallery, DJCAD. Entry is free.
