7 February 2003
David Mach, one of the UK's leading contemporary artists and an alumnus and honorary graduate of the University of Dundee, will give a public lecture in the city tomorrow, February 8.
Entitled "Business as Usual" David's talk is the penultimate in the University's popular Saturday evening lecture series.
Now Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy, David graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College in 1978. In 2002 he returned to Dundee to accept an honorary degree, and deliver the prestigious Discovery Lecture.
Mach's time at Dundee is best remembered for the extraordinary Carpet of Leaves he created in Camperdown Park, Dundee. Many thousands of beech leaves were individually woven into a 15 metre length of chicken wire, demonstrating the attention to tiny details within a huge format that remains a distinctive feature of Mach's work today.
It was while studying at Dundee that Mach created his first experiments with large-scale sculpture, which led on to celebrated works such as Big Heids on the M8; Train, a steam locomotive made entirely out of bricks and Bangers and Mash, made from four abandoned cars and 150,000 newspapers.
David's talk begins at 7pm in the Tower Extension Lecture Theatre, Tower Building. Entry is free.
