They have been gathering wood, weaving rods and making platters over the autumn and winter months to create colourful patterned screens that vary in size and shape as much as their makers.
An exhibition to be held at the University of Dundee's Botanic Garden entitled The Withy Project will give the public a chance to view and buy this unique work made by a group of seven adults from the Dudhope Adult Resource Centre and White Top Centre.
The project, organised by Cluny Barrowman, Skills Tutor at the White Top Centre and supervised by weaver expert Rachel Bower from Dykehead, has resulted in a colourful Japanese style screen that ranges in colours of green, purple, buff, lime and dark brown. The material found at Glen Clova consists of a variety of rods ranging from willow, plum, dogwood, larch, and broom.
Cluny Barrowman explains: "This venue provided inspiration for the artists involved who developed weaving skills and knowledge of artistic ideas that lead to the production of an exciting mixture of fine art and craft. Anyone interested in Withy Weaving should see this exhibition."
Rachel Bower took a great interest in the development of the artists' work: "The group steadily became more adept at the task once the technique of weaving was understood and mastered. This project saw the participants using their own initiative and growing in confidence."
Dundee City Council Social Work Convener, Betty Ward will be visiting the exhibition on Tuesday 12 February. She exclaimed: "This community art project shows the creativity and strength of the links between the University of Dundee, White Top Centre and Dudhope Adult Resource Centre."
The Withy Project will be exhibited at Dundee Botanic Gardens from 11 Feb - 14 March, Monday - Sunday 10am - 3.30pm. Admission for Adults £2, school children £1, senior citizen £1, University of Dundee and Friends of Botanic Garden, free admission. Wheelchair Access is available.
