Reaction to funding boost

The University of Dundee today welcomed news of £25 million of extra funding for Scottish research.

Five star research such as medicine and science for which the University of Dundee has an international reputation, stand to gain from the new money.

Principal Sir Alan Langlands said: "The higher education sector is one of Scotland's greatest assets; it must maintain and improve its comparative advantage and compete successfully with universities in the rest of the UK and overseas. This new money will go some way towards assisting that process.

"Science and technology are areas of immense importance in Scotland's economic development and Dundee has a key role to play in that economic development."

The recent Research Assessment Exercise revealed that 95% of researchers at the University of Dundee are now working in areas of international or national excellence. In the top category - five star - Dundee has 23% of researchers, second in Scotland only to Edinburgh with 25%. St Andrews comes third with 11%.
