Dundee University mechanical engineering students are getting back to basics with the help of local company Xm Services. Although the first-year students will go on to work with technology beyond our wildest imagination, core skills such as welding, hand skills, fitting and machining are still a fundamental part of their training.
Every Thursday sees the students further develop their engineering skills with Xm instructors Graham Douglas and Scott Patrick, and culminates in the students producing a piece of work at the end of their 8-week course.
Dr Mark Pridham, lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University said, "Training in the practical aspects of engineering is a vital part of studying Mechanical Engineering at Dundee University. The students enjoy the "hands on" work and it gives them a valuable appreciation and understanding of some of the skills and processes they are likely to encounter across the diverse range of careers they will follow as Graduate Mechanical Engineers.
