Waste Couture

photo opportunity 5pm, Friday 8 February, level 5 Matthew Building, Duncan of Jordanstone, Perth Road, Dundee

First year design students in the faculty of art and design at the University of Dundee have been given hardboard, cardboard, wire and papers and charged with creating something to be worn or to store. The results of the challenge go on display at Duncan of Jordanstone tomorrow afternoon.

The exhibition "Connections" includes a range of garments and accessories made from paper and fabric, delicate wire based jewellery pieces and bags, storage and display units made from wood and MDF, interactive pieces and ideas for puzzles and games. The students had to think of original ways to connect their materials trying stitching and nailing fabrics that would not usually be joined in that way.

Kevin McPhee has created a duffle coat out of thick felt and a pleated kilt from calico to match. Another student has used blue sacking to make a dress.

A range of construction techniques have been explored - hands on manipulation of paper, hand and machine stitching, woodworking, vacuum forming, weaving and drilling.

First year fine art students are also displaying their responses to the urban environment in the lower foyer gallery opening on Friday. One student has built a pavement along with a graffittid wall and a lamppost. Some have constructed 3 dimensional responses while others have looked at how light transforms the urban environment. Work includes paintings, sculpture and photography. The students' sketch books and research material will be on display to show the early processes of constructing a piece of art..

The exhibition opens at 4.30pm on Friday 8 February and runs until 1 March. The exhibition is free and open to the public./ENDS
