Student wins summer in Italy
Heather Buchan, a fourth year student in the printed textiles department
at Duncan of Jordanstone college of art and design at the University of
Dundee has won an all expenses paid trip to Milan this summer to work with top
Italian designers Orsini.
Seven finalists from Duncan of Jordanstone designed fabric for neck
ties.
The student designs - over 900 - are presently at Orsini in Italy being
reviewed by the company for further prizes and possible production for
Orsini's new range. Ties designed by Dundee students could be on the
international market next year.
Heather, 21 from Broughty Ferry, said she was surprised and delighted to
hear the news. She said: "Working with Orsini will be a fantastic
opportunity to learn professional skills and decide if their area of
design suits me. I'm looking forward to the experience both personally and for
the development of my work." Heather hopes to enter the commercial textiles
industry when she graduates from Duncan of Jordanstone later this year.
Duncan of Jordanstone's link with Orsini and Hugh Parsons Ltd began
three years ago when they established the competition at the college to
provide designs for ties. Hugh Parsons is a "niche" handmaker of ties in London
established in 1925. Orsini is reputedly the largest luxury tie
manufacturer in the world, selling over 3,000,000 ties a year under
names such as Gucci, Dunhill and Givenchy.
Seven runners up were awarded prizes for the high standard of designs
displayed in this year's competition. Kate Knight, Pauline Rogers, Mervi
Vayrynen, Sarah Jacobs, Ashley Gibb and Allister Smith in fourth year
and Amy Young in second year each received £50.
The presentation of the awards will take place at the University of
Dundee in May. ENDS
