New Professor
Professor Stewart Fleming has been appointed to the chair of cellular
and molecular pathology at the University of Dundee. He has carried out
extensive research in renal pathology including hypertension and renal
tumours. The results of his research have changed our understanding of
the cause of kidney tumours and the way that they are treated.
Stewart Fleming has been a practising pathologist for eighteen years
with twelve years experience as a consultant histopathologist to the Royal
Infirmary of Edinburgh and associated hospitals. In collaboration with
colleagues in Edinburgh he was recently awarded a Medical Research
Council grant for his current research totalling nearly £1,000,000. He is
particularly interested in identifying genes which are involved in
kidney damage occurring in patients with high blood pressure. Identification
of these genes will lead to better ways to treat patients with kidney
disease and kidney tumours.
He is excited at the prospect of joining the outstanding scientific
community in Dundee and collaborating with new colleagues in Surgery,
Oncology and Medicine.
Stewart Fleming comes to Dundee from the University of Edinburgh where
he was senior lecturer.
