A senior figure from the World Bank and the founder of the OPEC Development Fund arrives at the University of Dundee this week to deliver the first in a series of lectures to international postgraduates who will advise tomorrow's governments on aspects of financial law.
Dr Ibrahim Shihata, who recently accepted an appointment to teach international financial law at the University's world leading Centre for Energy Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, arrives in Dundee on Wednesday evening and will spend Thursday and Friday talking to staff and students before delivering a seminal lecture titled "Does Regulation of the Global Economy require Legal Disciplines on Sovereign Governments?"
Director of CEPMPLP Professor Thomas Walde said : "To be able to hear one of the architects of the global economy give his unique insights and perspective is a tremendous opportunity for the students and professionals on our courses, and a fantastic coup for Dundee. We are absolutely delighted that Dr Shihata has joined the staff of the centre where we hope his visiting expertise will help us extend our success to the field of business transactions in the global economy."
Already the University of Dundee Centre has made an international reputation as the world's premier graduate school in law and policy relating to natural resources and energy - a position which has involved staff in advising countries from China and Ukraine to Africa and the Baltic States on formulating laws and policies to regulate utilities and industries such as mining, water and electricity.
Professor Shihata is one of the most distinguished international economic lawyers, a prolific writer on international investment, financial and development law, Shari´ah. He is also the founding spirit and force behind the creation of the World Bank´s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Corporation - an international investment insurance agency and led the World Bank organisation for investment arbitration - ICSID- to its current flourishing as one of the world's leading arbitration institutions.
