Graduate awarded top European accolade
A University of Dundee graduate, currently in Italy on a scholarship has been awarded a prestigious
residency in France in recognition of her exceptional artwork. Emma Pratt who graduated from the
University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) with a first class degree earlier
this year will spend six-months in France on the renowned Pepinieres residency for young artists.
The Pepinieres accolade is awarded annually to a small number of young emerging artists across Europe.
With only a limited number of residences available it is a great opportunity for artists to establish
themselves internationally.
During her stay Emma will work, eat and sleep at the CAMAC (Centre d'art. Marnay Art Centre) residency
centre in the French village of 'Marnay sur-Seine', 75km from Paris in the scenic region of
Champagne-Ardenne.
This year's residency project called 'Artists in Context' will see Emma mainly focus on holding workshops
for young people with learning difficulties to develop their skills in sculpture and increase their
exposure to contemporary art. As well as encouraging children to develop their own skills in art and
design, Emma will be developing her own research.
Emma exhibited her sculptures made from vegetable fat at the University's 2004 Degree Show and she has a
lready been awarded a number of accolades for her work including a 2004 Royal Scottish Academy (RSA)
sculpture award. She is currently in Florence, Italy on the last few weeks of her three-month RSA
scholarship.
Emma explains, "I am delighted to have been awarded the Pepinieres residency. It is particularly special
to have the chance to hold the art workshops for young people who have had little or no exposure to
contemporary art. This is also a great opportunity for me to take advantage of new surroundings and I
hope to try something new - possibly away from sculpture.
"I am now focussed on finishing off in Italy in time to spend Christmas at home before heading out to
France in January next year."
