A novel approach to surgical instrument design; a new hospital curtain to help with patient well being; an exhibition of extreme jewellery, and a display of Patricia Rorie’s renowned self-portraiture forms part of the University of Dundee's 2004 Masters Expo exhibition.

Over 30 postgraduate students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) are taking part in the 2004 Expo that will highlight work from many of Scotland's most aspiring artists. Opening on Friday 10 December, Masters Expo 2004 showcases the work of students from Fine Art, Design, Electronic Imaging and Animation and Visualisation.

Master of Fine Art student, Patricia Rorie, has already gained a reputation across the UK for her self-portraiture paintings. Using a variety of disguises such as wigs, clothing and make-up Patricia takes photographs of herself and uses these as the starting point for her paintings. Although Patricia, herself, features in all of the paintings, the characters she creates are so effective that the portraits rarely look the same. Since graduating from DJCAD in 2002 with a first class degree, Dundee born Patricia has been kept busy with commission work.

Commenting on the exhibition, Patricia said, "I am delighted to have the opportunity to display my work at DJCAD again and am particularly looking forward to hearing the thoughts of the public who come to view my work."

Lorraine Anderson will be displaying the final stage of her three-part exhibition, which was based on research of 100 patients at the Respiratory Ward in Dundee's Ninewells hospital. Dundee born Lorraine, an asthma sufferer herself, stayed as a patient in the ward and decided that as part of her masters project, she would design new ward privacy curtains to help with patient wellbeing. Lorraine has just received news that a trial of the curtain design will go ahead in the Respiratory Ward in 2005.

Lorraine said, "It would have made a big difference to me while recovering in hospital to have more aesthetically pleasing surroundings. I hope my curtain design will promote wellbeing for the patients of the Ninewells Respiratory Ward."

Lorraine's exhibit, complete with hospital bed, curtain rail and the new curtain itself will be on display in DJCAD’s Cooper Gallery.

Eavan Coyne, (24), has adopted animation techniques most commonly used in the movie and games industry to create an animated design of a surgical instrument for minimal invasive medical surgery. Eavan embarked on the project after she discovered surgeons often find medical instruments uncomfortable and awkward to operate and sometimes unsuitable for carrying out specific surgical procedures.

After liaising with Dr Stuart Brown and the Surgical Technology Group based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Eavan used her skills in product design and animation to develop a new scissors type instrument for minimal invasive surgery that would meet the specific requirements for comfort and practicality.

The animation shows a virtual hand operating the instrument that enables surgeons to see first hand how it is correctly used. The design also incorporates features to help with comfort such as the ability to rotate through different angles.

Eavan explains, "The animated design demonstrates how product design and animation can be used in the medical environment to benefit surgeons by developing instruments that are perfectly tailored to their requirements."

Elaine Shemilt, Faculty Co-ordinator for Postgraduate Studies said, "DJCAD's Masters Expo has once again surpassed all aspirations. This year the students present a mix of traditional and alternative art and design techniques. Postgraduate teaching at DJCAD is growing from strength to strength with our courses attracting increased interest from across the globe."

A special preview is taking place at Cooper, Bradshaw, Upper & Lower Foyer Galleries and Graduate Centre within Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and Centrespace at University of Dundee Visual Research Centre (DCA) on Friday 10 December, 7.00pm - 9.00pm.
