Further successes for artist
Photo opportunities: Please call Press Office on 01382 344768 to arrange photographs of Lorraine with
her hospital bed exhibit throughout the day.
As well as receiving a distinction for her course, University of Dundee student Lorraine Anderson has
just been named the University's Master of Design student of the year. The Helen Gillespie bequest of
£1000 has also been awarded to Lorraine based on her excellent performance in exams and outstanding
academic merit during her course at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD).
Lorraine who has now just completed her postgraduate Master of Design course has produced a new privacy
curtain for patients in the Respiratory Ward in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. Her aim has been to create
an environment in the ward that would help with patient well-being and she developed the curtain based on
the research of 100 patients at the hospital.
The final stage of a three-part exhibition of Lorraine's work goes on show at DJCAD tonight as part of
the Masters Expo exhibition. Her exhibit, complete with hospital bed, curtain rail and the new curtain
itself will be on display in DJCAD’s Cooper Gallery.
Lorraine an asthma sufferer herself, stayed as a patient in the ward and decided that as part of her
masters project she would design new ward privacy curtains to help with patient well-being. Lorraine has
just received news that a trial of the curtain design will go ahead in the Respiratory Ward in 2005.
Still shocked by the news of her success, Lorraine said, "I am delighted to have been awarded a
distinction for my work. It is even more special to have received the student of the year award and the
£1000 will make this Christmas particularly special. Now the course is finished I am considering my
options for next year."
Masters Expo runs until Thursday 16 December. Opening hours for the Cooper Gallery where Lorraine's
exhibit is displayed are Mon-Fri 9.30am-5.30pm, Sat 12pm-4.30pm . The exhibition is free and open to
all.
