School pupils will tomorrow (Wednesday 17 December) have the chance to quiz Spanish-speaking Dundee FC players at the University of Dundee's annual Spanish day for secondary pupils.
The event, organised by the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS), is aimed at providing a fun cultural and learning experience, and encouraging pupils to study Spanish at university.
Over 30 Higher and Advanced Higher pupils of Spanish at The Grove, Harris, and St John's secondary schools in Dundee will attend sessions including a quiz, an introduction to University language courses, a treasure hunt and workshops on culture and language in Spanish-speaking countries.
Footballers Jonay Hernández, Nacho Novo and Julián Speroni will be involved in a short interview session (in Spanish) and then issue Certificates of Attendance to all the pupils.
Linda Hartley of CALS said, "We started this last year and it was such a great success with all participants that it has become an annual event.
It is particularly helpful for the pupils to speak with native Spanish-speakers. By providing this opportunity we not only hope to advance their learning but also inspire them to continue their language studies beyond school.
Here at CALS, we offer a fantastic range of services, including a very vibrant Hispanic Society and an Erasmus exchange programme with teaching institutions in Spain. Spanish is one of the world’s principal languages and the University has seen a steady increase in applicants in recent years."
