A major new Clinical Research Centre at the University of Dundee Medical School costing £9 million was approved today by University Court.
The new Centre which will attract international clinical academics focussing their research on disease prevention, diagnosis and early therapy for cancer, cardiovascular and thoracic diseases, nutrition, diabetes, metabolic disease and neuroscience.
In partnership with the NHS Tayside, the Clinical Research Centre will house patient rooms, investigation rooms and day rooms integrated with advanced diagnostic, analytical and imaging facilities.
The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council’s Strategic Research Investment Fund 2 has given £3.5m to the project with £1.2m coming from the University of Dundee. A further £3.5m will be raised to fund new research equipment.
The themes of research in the new Centre will reflect the strategic aims of the Scottish Executive, The Chief Scientist’s Office and the pharmaceutical industry, addressing vital disease and health issues.
Professor Brian Burchell, Dean of the Medical School welcomed today's decision on the new Centre saying: "The Clinical Research Centre at the University of Dundee will build on the world class research taking place in the Medical School. It will address health and disease for the 21st century using the latest clinical and imaging technology and will be a breeding ground for the next generation of clinical academics and other health care professionals trained in advanced clinical research technologies."
Work on the new building at Ninewells will commence in July or August 2004.
