The strong arm action of six intrepid swimmers has raised an astonishing £3438.50 for Diabetes UK.
On 13 August, led by the organiser Mrs Irene Blair, who has Type 2 diabetes, the six volunteers undertook the "Cold Water Challenge" and swam the mile between Tayport and Broughty Ferry to raise awareness of diabetes and funds for the national charity for people with diabetes.
Mrs Blair's fellow swimmers included Professor Andrew Morris, one of the UK's leading diabetes consultants, Dr Dario Alessi, internationally renowned insulin researcher, Dr Finlay Currie, a GP from Perth, Dr Liz Downes a lecturer at Abertay University and Vincent Henry son of Delia Henry, formerly Diabetes UK National Manager for Scotland.
Irene and her fellow swimmers will present the proceeds of their swim to John Fyfe, Diabetes UK National Fundraiser on Thursday, 19 December at 11 am in the Wellcome Trust Biocentre.
Mr Fyfe said, "Tayside has been at the centre of so many positive developments in diabetes over the years and the success of the 'Cold Water Challenge' is a tribute to the determination of our supporters in Tayside to make a difference. The money raised will boost Diabetes UK research towards a better future for people with diabetes and their families."
