A celebration will be held tomorrow to mark the retiral of ten members of staff from the Division of Electronic Engineering and Physics at the University of Dundee. Principal Sir Alan Langlands will present all ten engineers with gifts from the University at a retiral lunch in the Hilton Hotel tomorrow (Thursday 19 December).
Jim Anderson, Peter Baylis, Jim Cairns, Arthur Cracknell, John Low, Brian Makin, Finlay Philip, Bruce Ramsay, Peter Spencer and Brian Storey have all served between fourteen and thirty years teaching young aspiring engineers. Each has been engaged in research, catapulting the University of Dundee to discoveries and successful spin out companies over the years.
Jim Anderson
Senior lecturer in physics with a research interest in remote sensing
and energy saving.
Peter Baylis
Established the satellite receiving station at the University.
Jim Cairns
Co-founded spin out company AMCET developing state of the art materials
with applications in the electronic industry. Has attracted over £5
million in funding for the University.
Arthur Cracknell
Carnegie Chair of Physics running NATO summer schools on remote sensing.
Intends to travel across Asia on the trans-Siberian railway after he
retires.
John Low
Senior lecturer in physics. Active recruiter for the University.
Brian Makin
Watson Watt professor of electronic engineering with a research interest
in electrostatics.
Finlay Philip
Has devoted the last 30 years to teaching basic analogue and digital
electronics to students at all levels.
Bruce Ramsay
Lead a research group in electrical power engineering and ran an MSC
course joint with Abertay.
Peter Spencer
Lecturer in physics with a special love of opera. Organised trips
through to the Scottish Opera in Glasgow for many years.
Brian Storey
Senior lecturer and expert on using and teaching software applications.
All ten men have either retired over the last couple of years or are scheduled to retire this year.
