Who killed Sir Philip Cohen? This is the question to be answered using the latest DNA techniques by 30 school pupils participating in the Masterclass Murder Mystery on Saturday, 14 December.
With strands of hair found clutched in the victim's hand as the only evidence to his demise, Principal Investigator in the School of Life Sciences Dr Carol MacKintosh and her team of colleagues will lead the investigation to find the killer.
The S1 and S2 pupils will be presented with strands of hair, supposedly found in Sir Philip's lifeless hand, and they will watch security camera evidence of "suspects" who were in the building at the same time as the victim. The pupils will the take sample hairs from the suspects and run experiments to compare the DNA from these hairs with those found in the victims' hand, thereby identifying the killer.
The Royal Society of Edinburgh Masterclasses offer secondary pupils with enthusiasm and flair for science and technology exposure to the inspiration of experts, as well as the opportunity to roll-up their sleeves and take-on practical, hands-on challenges.
Dr MacKintosh's Masterclass is the final in the highly successful series of four Saturday morning practical classes given by staff within the School of Life Sciences this term. The pupils are from schools in Dundee, Tayside and Perth and Kinross.
