A University of Dundee boxer has claimed the title of British Universities Light Heavyweight Champion.

Fourth year Mechanical Engineering student and Boxing Club president Mark Houston went one better on his silver medal of last year by beating his Leeds University opponent in the first round to take the prestigious title.

Club members Andrew Renwick, lightweight, and Phil Neill, light welterweight, also did well in the competition, reaching the semi-finals of their categories. The event was held at St Andrews University and involved 15 universities from around the UK. All three of the Dundee boxers hail from Monifieth.

Mark, 23, said, "I had trained hard for this event but was still delighted to have won because the standard of competitors was extremely impressive. All of us really have to thank coaches Brian and Graham Healy for the work they put in to help us in our success."

Boxing Club members are now in training for the Scottish Universities Championship in February.
