17 December 2001
photo opportunity 12.40pm, Tuesday 18 December, lecture theatre, Medical Sciences Institute, University of Dundee.
Over 450 school pupils will descend upon the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee this week for the annual biology conference where they will discover some secrets on how to pass their forthcoming exams.
Dr Bruno Frenguelli will give the pupils an especially useful talk on the processes believed to be important in learning and memory. With the higher examinations only weeks away - Dr Frenguelli will no doubt be listened to with interest to glean some tips for successful revision.
Pupils from schools in Dundee, Angus and Perth and Kinross will hear a number of short lectures on how to maintain a healthy heart - a particularly topical subject given that Scotland has one of the highest levels of coronary heart disease in Europe, and consideration of the evolutionary puzzle of why sex evolved and how small changes in genetic make-up lead to major differences between the sexes.
The aim of the conference is to increase the awareness of recent exciting developments in life sciences and the breadth of career opportunities that the biosciences have to offer. It also provides the pupils, who will be sitting their mock higher examinations in January, with a unique opportunity to experience University life at first-hand.
After the morning series of lectures, the pupils will visit Belmont Hall for lunch and experience a taste of life in halls of residence./ENDS
