Exhibition opening
Photo opportunity: 1.00pm, Monday 22 August, Lamb Gallery, Tower building, University of
Dundee
A new exhibition that features work from Chinese and Korean students from the University of
Dundee's art and design foundation programme will open at the University next week.
The art and design foundation programme is run jointly between the School of Applied Linguistic
and Language Studies and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD). It is geared
towards international students who want to improve their English language skills to help them
study for a degree in art, design or architecture at DJCAD.
The pieces of work all centre around the theme of a 'journey' which relates directly to the
students who themselves are in the transition between eastern and western higher education
settings.
One student, Kyung Ha Jin, has created a journey inside a suitcase. The suitcase illustrates a
journey Kyung himself has taken whilst at the same time demonstrates everything anyone would need
to start their own journey from a 'typewriter' for diary entries to 'music' for entertainment and
a 'map of clouds' showing clouds in the shape of countries.
Surfing the Internet and the London Underground map illustrates Kim Choong's journey. He has
combined the idea of a Computer Processing Chip which is used by many people surfing the web with
the London tube map. He has visualised the international computer network using the very
distinctive typography and imagery of the capital's tube network.
