Surprise farewell as leading nursing academic retires

David Muir, Associate Dean of the University of Dundee's School of Nursing and Midwifery will celebrate
his retirement at a surprise gathering of friends and colleagues at the Balbirnie House Hotel, Fife on
Wednesday 11 August.
Over 150 colleagues and friends, past and present will gather at the surprise 'afternoon tea' to wish
David luck after almost forty years with the School. His contribution to the growing success of nursing
and midwifery education is recognised at the highest levels throughout Scotland.
David's career has flourished after joining the School, then known as the East Fife School of Nursing and
Midwifery in 1971 as a nurse teacher. Originally, from Cowdenbeath David studied at West Fife Group
School of Nursing between 1960 - 1963, graduating from Edinburgh University in 1971. He was awarded the
Tuke medal in 1963 for theory and practice in nursing.
Professor Sheila Hunt, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery said, "We offer David our warm
congratulations on a very successful career and thanks for a life long contribution to establishing and
improving nursing and midwifery education in Scotland."
David will be able to spend more time with his wife Florence and three daughters Alison, Claire and Lorna
and pursue his love of gardening.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery operates from three large campuses in Dundee and Kirkcaldy, with
study centres in Perth and Angus and is one of the largest nursing and midwifery education providers in
Scotland.
