Dundee's artist remembered
Photo opportunity: Matthew Jarron will be hanging the exhibition between Tues 24 and Thurs 26 August.
The official opening is from 5.30-7pm on Friday 27 August in the Lamb Gallery, Tower Building, University
of Dundee.
A new exhibition featuring the work of Dundee painter David Foggie, whose work has been almost forgotten
for the past fifty years, will open at the University of Dundee on 27 August. Works from the National
Galleries of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy among others will be on display in what is the first
exhibition devoted to Foggie for over 25 years.
The show in the Tower Foyer and Lamb Galleries will bring together more than 60 oil paintings,
watercolours, drawings and engravings including family pieces owned by the artist's grandchildren and
great grand children. The public will have the opportunity to see works loaned from around the country
as well as pieces from the University’s own collections and those of Dundee’s McManus Galleries.
Born in Dundee in 1878, David Foggie became a master of painting technique, specialising in stunningly
beautiful portraits. An influential teacher at Edinburgh College of Art and Secretary of the Royal
Scottish Academy, his work was highly acclaimed during his lifetime, but has often been neglected since.
Hailed as "one of the great personalities of our time" at the time of his death in 1948, this exhibition
provides a unique opportunity to re-evaluate an extraordinary artistic talent.
Mathew Jarron, University Museum Curator said, "We are delighted to have the opportunity to display such
an extensive collection of David Foggie's work, and with luck this show will help to revive popular
interest in this highly talented figure."
The exhibition runs until 15 October and is free and open to the public.
