Over the past four weekends, scientists in the School of Life Sciences have been fund raising for their new Diabetes Research Centre at four TESCO stores in Dundee and Perth. So far, they have collected £10,945 to which TESCO will add an additional 20%. The finale to the August long campaign will take place this coming weekend at TESCO, Riverside, Dundee where the scientists will be hoping for a bumper collection.
Commenting on the month's efforts, Sir Philip Cohen said "The generosity of the citizens of Dundee and Perth continues to amaze me. The many diabetics and their relatives and friends who have spoken to me in TESCO has really brought home to me how urgently improved drugs are needed to treat this condition. In addition to raising a significant amount for the new building, the TESCO collection has raised the profile of the campaign locally. Indeed, as a result of this publicity, I understand that one Dundonian decided last week to leave the residue of their estate to the new Research Centre, while another has added a legacy to their will in our favour. With a world class research centre on your doorstep, I can understand how it must be more rewarding to leave one's money to something that will be of benefit to Dundee, as well as to Diabetes. The new building will create about 600 new jobs directly and indirectly."
