The Dundee Institute of Architecture (DIA) is launching a new initiative to engage and excite the public about architecture tomorrow as they show their new magazine for a public audience in one of Dundee's most exciting architectural ventures this year.
The architects will introduce the new magazine in the newly opened glass atrium linking two of the most splendid Victorian buildings in the City - the Old Medical School and the Carnelley building on the University of Dundee's campus.
Published by the Dundee Institute of Architects (DIA), and supported by a major grant from The Lighthouse's Innovation Fund, Dialogue is part of an initiative to make architecture more accessible to the public. It sets out to be an accessible magazine which uses everyday language and striking images, in order to address a local agenda.
An 80 page journal in a unique, lustrous square format, Dialogue is built around four sections: DIA's own editorial; a range of building studies from across Angus, Dundee, Fife and Perth & Kinross; a series of articles on the theme of education; and finally a range of features, many of which concentrate on the architecture and environs of Glen Lyon in Highland Perthshire. A common element throughout is the desire to highlight the over-looked and under-appreciated, and also to cover issues which are not addressed in the national magazines.
The magazine will be distributed free of charge to schools, libraries, businesses and Planning Departments through the north-east, from an initial print-run of 2000 copies. In order to reach as broad an audience as possible Dialogue is backed up with DIA's website, www.dia-architects.com which includes a micro-site dedicated to Dialogue. DIA hopes to stimulate participation in future issues, to promote awareness of the local built environment, and above all to foster a dialogue between professionals and the public.
