Dr Kate Storey, a Principal Investigator who runs a research group in the Wellcome Trust Biocentre at the University of Dundee, has just secured a prestigious five-year Senior Non-Clinical Fellowship, worth £900,000, from the Medical Research Council (MRC). The Fellowship will not only pay for Dr Storey's salary but will also meet the salaries of two full-time postdoctoral research assistants and one full-time technician as well as equipment and the cost of research consumables.
The MRC Senior Non-Clinical Fellowships are highly prestigious awards, reserved for scientists of exceptional ability who are well-qualified for academic research careers, having demonstrated clear ability as independent researchers and showing the potential to be leaders in their field. The Fellowships are tenable for up to five years and renewable for a further five, providing expenses for research support staff and a salary. The Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis with only eight awards this year.
Based in the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology, Dr Storey's research aims to understand fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the generation of the nervous system. This involves the characterisation of key signalling pathways and transcription factors that drive cells to become neurons and has long-term implications for the generation of therapeutic neural transplants and gene therapy approaches to neural injury and disease. Dr Storey joined the staff at the Wellcome Trust Biocentre in October 2000 following five years a s a biomedical researcher at the University of Oxford.
The Medical Research Council is a research organisation that aims to improve health by promoting research into all areas of medical and related science through its research establishments, and by providing training and career development opportunities to scientists and postgraduate students./ends
