Principal benefactress of University College, Dundee, Mary Ann Baxter, may have endowed the institution for "promoting the education of persons of both sexes", but for all that, the female students from those early days have left behind only a faint trace of their presence.
A new exhibition at University of Dundee - 'Living Her Own Life' - attempts to recover the experience and achievements of these women, both at University College Dundee and the Technical Institute / School of Art, Dundee, from the period between 1883 - 1909.
Mary Arnold, the 3rd Year Fine Art student who has conceived this exhibition, was drawn to discover more about these women from the experience of her grandmother who had been a student in the early 1900s. Mary said "The little we know about these women students suggests there are some fascinating life stories to discover."
In a series of evocative images, the women's faces have been taken out of the anonymity of group photographs of the period, sourced from University of Dundee Archives.
Visitors will be invited to contribute their own reminiscences and asked to help put names to the faces.
