Green travel week

Photo opportunity: 12.30pm, Monday April 25, Reception, Tower Building, University of Dundee

Attending: Transportation Convener Councillor Fiona Grant, Travel Dundee Representative, Representatives from Dundee City Council Planning and Transportation Dept and University travel committee members.

The University of Dundee will launch its first Green Travel Week on Monday 25 April. This is an information week promoting alternative transport means for University staff including cycling, walking, public transport and car sharing - all in a bid to encourage staff to use more sustainable means of transport.

Representatives from Dundee City Council will be on campus promoting initiatives including the Dundee lift share scheme, available at www.dundeeliftshare.com which makes it simple for people across the city to car share. The Council will also be on hand to explain their online journey planning website, www.dundeetravelinfo.com that gives instant access to public transport information including timetables. Additionally, a representative from Travel Dundee will highlight the increasing accessibility of public transport for University staff and students.

The University is improving its services for cyclists to include free secure lock up facilities and a special bicycle users' group aims to ensure that cyclists' needs are catered for in the development of the campus.

The University's Institute of Sport and Exercise will also be encouraging staff to take part in the 'walk in to work out' scheme. The aim is to promote active commuting to work and encourage University staff and students to walk to the campus. This is known to be an effective and easy way to increase your daily physical activity and help achieve health benefits.

Dundee City Council planning and transportation convener Councillor Fiona Grant said: "The city council has attracted more than £14 million to Dundee over the past few years to improve public transport in the city and this has made a real difference. The websites provide valuable information about public transport and car sharing."
