Leading architect develops masterplan for Dundee campus

One of the UK's leading architects and masterplanners has been engaged to take the University of Dundee's ambitious plans for the redevelopment of the campus to the next stage. Sir Terry Farrell - who designed the new Home Office headquarters in London and the Edinburgh International Conference Centre - is taking a personal role in the University masterplan development.

As the building programme now enters an advanced stage with key buildings such as the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and the Queen Mother Building due for completion soon, and work starting on new residences and a new faculty and teaching building, his practice will be ensuring that the ambience and the coherence of the redeveloped campus match the needs and aspirations of its community.

Consultation will be a key feature of the process and London-based Sir Terry will give an open presentation on the plans to staff, students and the wider community on 25 April at 5.30pm in the Cooper Gallery at Duncan of Jordanstone College following a presentation to members of the University Court, earlier the same day.

"With major buildings now well advanced, we are looking closely at the ambience that can be created by getting the spaces and permeability right both between them and with the rest of the city. This is a subtle but vital stage in the redevelopment process. We will be giving detailed examination to the character of the heart of the campus - the planned campus green - and how the campus and its buildings ‘talk to’ the precinct. With changes in the city surrounding the campus - Seabraes Yard, car parks, and riverside developments the emphasis is on developing and reinforcing new routes linking to the surrounding city." said Sir Terry.

Sir Terry, whose award winning practice has offices in London and Edinburgh, has visited Dundee a number of times and is working closely with Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise Tayside in taking this forward.

A website detailing the outline plans can be viewed at www.dundee.ac.uk/estates/masterplan/ and comments are welcome.

"We will be taking note of all comments and using them to inform the next stage of the process" said University Director of Campus Services Mr David Yule.

Also involved is sculptor and artist David Mach, recently named visiting Professor of Inspiration and Discovery, who is developing ideas for a public work of art based on the life sciences which could be incorporated into the campus plan. Mach ’s first sketches will be revealed on 25 May at an event in the Bonar Hall.
